The League of Communist Republicans (LCR) was a Marxist-Leninist and Irish republican micro-organisation that split from Sinn Féin and the Provisional IRA in 1986. It emerged in the period surrounding the 1986 Ard Fheis debate over abstentionism, and its founders advanced an explicitly socialist analysis that they felt the wider Provisional movement had failed to develop. The League was almost exclusively composed of republican prisoners held in Long Kesh together with their families. In total its membership amounted to approximately 25 to 30 prisoners and a similar number of family members. Founding members included Tommy McKearney, Tom McFeely, James Tierney, Eugene Byrne and Oliver Corr.
