Three reference guides to the archive’s publications, organisations, and terms

This section gathers three reference guides to the archive: publications, organisations, and terms. Together they cover the vocabulary a reader needs to move through the collection with confidence, whether that means identifying an unfamiliar paper, placing an organisation within the movement’s history, or making sense of a term encountered in a primary source.

None of these glossaries is a substitute for the material itself. They exist to make that material legible: to supply the context a document assumes its original reader already had.

Publications

The Glossary of Republican Publications catalogues the newspapers, magazines, journals, bulletins and newsletters held in the archive, from the closing years of the nineteenth century to the present. Each entry gives a short account of a title’s origins, its politics, and its place within the wider republican press, with a direct link to the issues held here.

Organisations

The Glossary of Republican Organisations sets out the political parties, armed groups, and affiliated bodies that make up the republican tradition and its various strands, Provisional, Official, Republican Sinn Féin, the IRSP and INLA, and the splinters and successor groups that followed. It traces how one organisation gave rise to another, and where the lines between them fall.

Terms

The Glossary of Terms explains the acronyms, slogans and specialist vocabulary that recur throughout the archive’s primary sources, the shorthand a reader needs to follow a document written for an audience that already knew what the words meant.

Used together, these glossaries should allow anyone arriving at the archive without prior background to read its holdings as they were meant to be read.
