For more than twenty years before the Troubles, The United Irishman was the voice of a republican movement that most of Ireland had written off. The monthly organ of Sinn Féin, sold hand to hand by the party’s members, it carried the cause through the lean years when the IRA was small and the national question seemed settled, into the Border Campaign of 1956 to 1962, and on through the restless decade of change that would end in the movement’s division.
Its pages track that arc closely. In the 1950s the paper rallied support for the renewed armed campaign along the border and mourned its dead, among them Seán South and Fergal O’Hanlon, while Sinn Féin enjoyed a brief electoral revival. In the 1960s it registered the movement’s steady turn toward social agitation, civil rights, and Marxist analysis under Cathal Goulding’s leadership, the shift that would split republicanism at the end of 1969.
First published in May 1948 under Michael Traynor, the paper was edited at the outset by Seán G. O’Kelly, from an office at 38 South King Street in Dublin, and for a short period before the split by the historian Éamonn MacThomáis. Its other editors over the years included Seán Cronin, Seán Ó Brádaigh (1958–1960), Ruairí Ó Brádaigh, Eoin Ó Murchú, Jackie Ward, Seamus Ó Tuathail, Denis Foley, and Tony Meade.
After the split in the republican movement in December 1969 and January 1970, the title remained with Official Sinn Féin, and that later run is held in a separate section of this archive. The issues gathered here, from the first of May 1948 to the last before the parting of the ways, are the record of the movement in its undivided form, and of the arguments that finally pulled it apart.

Through the 1950s The United Irishman was the chronicle of a movement that had staked everything on the border. It built support for Operation Harvest, the IRA’s campaign of 1956 to 1962, carried the funerals and tributes of volunteers such as Seán South and Fergal O’Hanlon, and reported Sinn Féin’s brief electoral revival before the campaign’s collapse left the movement to take stock.

The issues of the 1960s capture a movement remaking itself. Under Cathal Goulding the leadership turned from physical force toward social and economic agitation, housing and civil rights, and an increasingly Marxist politics, and the paper carried the new thinking. The same arguments, over abstention and the leftward course, would divide the movement at the end of 1969.
