Work in progress

1987

A year of heavy losses for the IRA, marked above all by the deaths of eight of its members in the SAS ambush at Loughgall, and one that ended in disaster for the movement with the Enniskillen bombing, which killed eleven civilians at a Remembrance Day ceremony and drew condemnation at home and abroad.

Few periods in the conflict were as bleak as the spring of 1988, when three IRA members were shot dead by the SAS in Gibraltar and their funerals became the scene of further killings at Milltown cemetery and after. Later that year the British government introduced its broadcasting ban, barring the direct broadcast of Sinn Féin and other voices, a measure the paper covered closely as an attack on republican expression.

By 1989 the conflict had settled into a grim attritional rhythm, and the year was darkened by killings on all sides, among them the murder of the solicitor Pat Finucane in a case that would become central to later allegations of collusion. The paper continued to report the campaign and the movement’s growing political work under the constraints of the broadcasting ban.

1990

In 1990 the IRA carried its campaign into Britain, killing the Conservative MP Ian Gow and bombing the London Stock Exchange. Yet the year also brought one of the first public hints of movement, when the Northern Ireland Secretary Peter Brooke stated that Britain had no selfish strategic or economic interest in remaining in Ireland. The paper reported the war and that faint opening side by side.
