Saoirse – Irish Freedom is the monthly newspaper of Republican Sinn Féin. It takes its name from Irish Freedom – Saoirse, a Fenian paper which first appeared in November 1910 and continued as a monthly publication until December 1914 when it was suppressed by the British authorities.
Saoirse – Irish Freedom grew out of the split in the Republican Movement in 1986. On 2 November 1986, the majority of delegates to the Sinn Féin Ard Fheis voted to drop the policy of abstentionism if elected to Leinster House, but not the British House of Commons or the parliament at Stormont, thus ending the self-imposed ban on Sinn Féin elected representatives from taking seats at Leinster House. Ruairí Ó Brádaigh and several supporters walked out and immediately set up Republican Sinn Féin (RSF)
In November, 1986 the first issue of Republican Bulletin appeared to explain the reasons for the split and the progress of the re-organisation. It’s format was A4 with eight pages.

Republican Bulletin continued to be produced every month until May 1987 when it was replaced by a new monthly Saoirse – Irish Freedom which was published in the same A4 format. In November 1987, Saoirse began to be produced as an eight-page tabloid. Since then, the paper has continued to grow and is currently produced as a 16-page monthly tabloid.
