Republican calendars and Christmas cards represent a distinctive and often overlooked form of Irish republican political communication. Produced annually by republican organisations and local groups, these items served both as fundraising tools and as a means of reinforcing political identity and commemorating republican history. As ephemera they were rarely preserved systematically, making surviving collections particularly valuable to researchers and historians.
The Irish Republican Digital Archive holds a collection of republican calendars and Christmas cards spanning from the 1970s to the 2020s. The material is drawn primarily from the Provisional republican movement but also includes items from Republican Sinn Féin, the Irish Republican Socialist Party, Noraid, and various local republican groups, reflecting the breadth of the tradition across five decades.
These items offer a unique window into how republican organisations presented themselves and their history to supporters over the years. The imagery, language, and figures commemorated across decades of calendars and cards provide researchers with a rich visual and cultural record of Irish republicanism that complements the more formal documentary material held elsewhere in the archive.
