The introduction of internment continues to cast a long shadow over political life in the North, with hundreds still held without trial and the republican press maintaining its role as a record of their names and conditions. The year is dominated politically by the Sunningdale Agreement — a power-sharing settlement that republicans reject as an internal solution that copper-fastens partition and leaves the national question untouched. Both An Phoblacht and Republican News reflect the movement’s uncompromising opposition to any arrangement that falls short of British withdrawal, while covering an IRA campaign that has extended its reach to Britain itself with bombings in London. The two papers increasingly function as complementary voices — Republican News rooted in the day-to-day realities of the northern conflict, An Phoblacht providing broader political analysis and an all-Ireland perspective.

The Ulster Workers’ Council strike of May brings down the Sunningdale Executive within days, demonstrating the capacity of loyalist resistance to veto political arrangements it finds unacceptable — a lesson republicans note carefully. The year also brings some of the conflict’s heaviest civilian casualties, with the Dublin and Monaghan bombings of May killing thirty-three people in the South in what republicans and many others attribute to loyalist groups operating with British collusion.
An Phoblacht and Republican News continue to develop as publications, their journalism sharpening alongside a conflict that shows no sign of resolution. By year’s end the failure of Sunningdale has returned the North to direct rule and confirmed, in the republican analysis, that no internal settlement within the existing constitutional framework can hold.
